Omar Abu Shah, Deputy Chairman of the Libyan State Supreme Council, gave information about the initiative they started to remove the blockage in front of the elections in the press statement he made in the capital Tripoli.
Abu Shah noted that the process regarding the presidential elections continues without any constitutional or legal control, and this situation harms the political process.
Noting that they started an initiative to remove the blockage in front of the elections, Abu Shah said, “The initiative includes holding the parliamentary and presidential elections on the same date, in February 2022, and the elected people to serve for a period of 4 years.” said.
On 5 December, 70 deputies in Libya expressed their concerns about the “negative developments in the election process” and demanded that the House of Representatives convene to open an investigation against the Supreme Election Commission.
The House of Representatives also announced yesterday that a 5-member committee has been established to communicate with the Supreme Election Commission to monitor obstacles to the elections scheduled for December 24.
It was announced that the nomination process for the parliamentary elections in Libya ended as of yesterday evening.
Controversial elections While
the time is running out for the elections in Libya, the parties, consisting of the House of Representatives (TM) and the State Supreme Council, have not been able to reach a consensus on the law that will determine the legal infrastructure of the presidential and parliamentary elections.
TM President and political ally of Khalifa Haftar, leader of the illegitimate forces in the east of the country, Akile Salih, announced that he had unilaterally enacted a law on presidential elections on 8 September.
This law, passed by Salih without putting it to a vote in the Assembly and without applying to the State Supreme Council, was rejected by the Council.
With another unilateral law enacted on October 4, TM announced that the parliamentary elections would be held one month after the presidential elections.
At the meetings of the UN-led Libyan Political Dialogue Forum in November 2020, it was decided that both elections would be held on 24 December.
